PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an agent for promoting the formation and maturation of cornified envelope (hereinafter referred as CE). SOLUTION: This agent for promoting the formation and maturation of CE comprises a pyrrolidone derivative represented by the general formula (1) (wherein, R is H, a 1-4C straight chain or branched alkyl having zero to three hydroxy groups, or a 3-7C cycloalkyl groups having zero to five hydroxy groups) and/or its salt.
