A sensor monitors the operation of a winding station, at an automatic winder, by the quality of the yarn affected by cutting when the standard drops below permissable levels, and the number of cuts per bobbin are counted until the bobbin is doffed. After a given number of supply or winding bobbin changes, the winding station resumes working when a yarn is at the sensor and pref. when the upper yarn of the winding bobbin is joined to the lower yarn of the supply bobbin, and a control unit generates a test pulse. The test pulse is stored at the start of the signal path of the sensor monitoring the yarn quality, to trigger a cutting action. The sensor registers the presence of a yarn at the monitoring point. An interruption in the yarn travel is checked by the control, and the cutter is closed when the yarn is moving, on transmission block of the test pulse and on a function failure so that the winding station is blocked and a fault signal is developed. ADVANTAGE - The operation gives a more comprehensive check on the working of the winding station and protects the delicate cutting system.
