PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for preventing the following situation: a passbook cannot be detected due to an increased space between the passbook and a passbook detecting sensor part for detecting the passbook, and the passbooks cannot be accurately counted. SOLUTION: The device comprises a passbook cassette part 15, and the passbook detecting sensor part 26 adapted to emit light onto each passbook while moving over passbooks in the thickness direction to detect the passbooks from an output value according to the intensity of the reflected light. A guide roller 29 is attached to the sensor part 26, so that the space between the sensor part 26 and the passbooks is kept constant by rolling the guide roller 29 on the passbooks.
