1384423 Adhesive transfer tapes AVERY PRODUCTS CORP 24 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 24390/72 Heading B2E A pressure-sensitive adhesive transfer tape for applying adhesive to a substrate comprises (a) a carrier tape material having a release surface on at least a portion of one side and (b) a plurality of substantially non-contiguous segments along the length of the carrier tape in detachable adhesive contact with the release surface, the construction being such that after applying segments from the carrier tape to a given substrate the carrier tape can be detached from the applied segments whereby a transfer of segments from the carrier tape to the substrate is effected. In a preferred construction the carrier tape has release coating on both of its surfaces, the pressure-sensitive adhesive segments being on only one surface. In this construction the reverse side of the carrier tape has a back size having a lower adhesivity for the pressure-sensitive adhesive segments than the adhesivity of the pressure-sensitive adhesive segments for the principal release coating on the carrier tape. Alternatively a second release coating tape may be inserted between the convolutions. The width of the pattern of applied pressure-sensitive adhesive segments may be not co-extensive with the width of the tapes so that there are borders on one or both edges of the carrier tape which serve as guide(s) during dispensing of the tape from a suitable dispensing means. The carrier tape may be of paper, cellulose acetate, polyolefin or polyester. In one embodiment if a polyolefin tape is employed one surface may be corona treated so that it would function as a principal release surface and the non-treated surface would function as the backsize. The pressure-sensitive adhesive may be based on polyisobutylene, styrene - butadiene copolymers or ethylenevinyl-acetate copolymers. Tackifiers such as terpene resins, rosins, rosin esters, indene resins and alkyl-substituted aromatic resins may also be present. Butylated hydroxy toluene may be present as antioxidant. The pressure-sensitive adhesive segments may be applied by rotogravure printing, silk screen printing, or intermittent extrusion of an adhesive melt. |
