<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer electrolyte fuel cell excellent in supply of a gas to a catalyst by discharging efficiently generated water of the cell. <P>SOLUTION: In the polymer electrolyte fuel cell provided with through holes penetrating from one side to the other side in a gas diffusion layer of carbon paper, the through holes have polygonal pyramid shape up to hexagonal pyramid with an angle of the inner wall face to the axial center of the through hole of 7.5° or more and 45° or less, and the cross-sectional area of the through holes is 0.01 mm<SP>2</SP>or less on the catalyst layer side and increases toward the separator side in monotone. The catalyst layer is coated after forming the through holes of polygonal pyramid in the gas diffusion layer. Thereby, generated water of the cell is efficiently discharged, and the gas is sufficiently supplied to maintain high voltage. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
