Apparatus and method for assembling a monotube type shock absorber are provided to assembly the monotube type shock absorber quickly by fixing a cylinder case to a cylinder fixing unit, and fixing a free-piston and a rod assembly to a cylinder case with a free-piston mounting unit and a rod assembly mounting unit. Apparatus and method for assembling a monotube type shock absorber comprises a frame unit(100), a cylinder fixing unit(200), a free-piston mounting unit(300), a rod assembly mounting unit(400), a fastening unit(500), and a control unit. The frame unit includes a central frame(103) and an upper frame(104). The cylinder fixing unit, which is located under the central frame, holds the lower part of the cylinder case. The free-piston mounting unit includes a fixing chuck, a loader, and a guider. The fixing chuck picks up a free-piston. The loader moves the picked free-piston up and down. The guider, which is installed at the lower part of the free-piston mounting unit, has an inner edge corresponding to the periphery of a piston rod of a rod assembly. The free-piston mounting unit moves in all directions to insert the free-piston in the cylinder case fixed to the cylinder fixing unit. The rod assembly mounting unit picks up the rod assembly, and moves in all direction to insert the rod assembly into the fixed cylinder case. The fastening unit includes a fixing jig, a nozzle unit, and a caulking member. The fixing jig fixes the free-piston and the rod guide of the rod assembly to the upper part of the cylinder case. The nozzle unit moves into a gas/oil inlet formed at the upper part of the cylinder case. The caulking member presses the outer part of the cylinder case to caulk the rod guide and the cylinder case.
