PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system for conditioning incident beams comprised of several wavelengths and selecting a desired set of wavelengths from among a plurality of available wavelengths and combining them into a single output beam. SOLUTION: The optical system 200 includes a first stack of beam splitters 107, an array of two or more filters 115 and a second stack of beam splitters. The first stack of beam splitters 107 comprises a first beam splitter 110(1) which is constituted so as to receive the incident beams and produce first output beams and to provide first internal beams to the second stack of beam splitters, (n-2) pieces of beam splitters 110(2),(3) which are constituted so as to receive the internal beams from the first adjacent beam splitter and produce (i)th output beams (i=2 to n-1) and to provide (i)th internal beam to the second adjacent beam splitter and a final beam splitter 110(4) which is constituted so as to receive the internal beams from the adjacent beam splitter and produce final output beam.
