PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent vertical shadow from occurring on a display screen of an active matrix type display apparatus. SOLUTION: A column data calculation part 13 performs a predetermined calculation about data in the columnar direction contained in an input image data D, and outputs a calculation result A. An LUT 14 converts the calculation result A into a vertical retrace period data B. A switch 15 outputs the image data D in an effective period of the image data D according to a timing control signal TC, and outputs the vertical retrace period data B in the vertical retrace period. A data signal line driving circuit 3 drives data signal lines Y1 to Ym based on a data output from a display control circuit 11. The display control circuit 11 may halt processing for obtaining the vertical retrace period data B when the image data D is a dynamic image data, and may obtain the vertical retrace period data B based on ambient temperature and external light intensity.
