PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp capable of suppressing a blackening phenomenon and preventing devitrification caused by blackening while preventing a tip of an electrode from being set at an excessively high temperature; and a rear projector device using the high-pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp is provided with two electrodes 10 each having a melt part 14 formed by putting a coil formed by winding a wire of a high-melting-point metal on one end of a mandrel 12 formed of a high-melting-point metal, and by melting a part of a tip side of the coil, and is structured such that tips 14a of the melt parts 14 of the two electrodes 10 are arranged oppositely to each other in a space with a luminescent substance, a rare gas and halogen sealed therein. In the high-pressure discharge lamp, when the temperature of the tip 14a of each electrode 10 in lighting the lamp is set to 2,600-2,800°C by adjusting at least one of the electrode mass of the electrode 10, the winding length of the coil and the melting length of the melt part 14, the temperature difference between the tip 14a of the electrode and a root part 16 gets to 500°C or less.
