PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a writing device that can judge an insertion direction of a display recording medium even when a display recording medium is not provided with coloring, a notch or the like for judging the insertion direction of the display recording medium, and to provide a method for judging an insertion direction of a medium. SOLUTION: The writing device 100 is equipped with: a top end detecting unit 6 that detects the top end of a display recording medium 2 having a pair of power receiving terminals 206A, 206B at predetermined positions; a conveying unit that conveys the display recording medium 2 with the top end detected by the top end detecting unit 6 to a writing position; a luminous energy detecting unit 30 that irradiates the display recording medium 2 with light while the medium is conveyed by the conveying unit to the writing position and detects the luminous energy of reflected light; and a judging unit that compares the detected luminous energy by the luminous energy detecting unit 30 to a reference value after a predetermined time is passed from the time of detecting the top end by the top detecting unit 6, and judges a correct or incorrect state of the insertion direction of the display recording medium 2 based on the comparison result.
