PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging optical system as a compact zoom lens having a wide field angle, and having a variable power ratio of about 3, and also, where aberrations are satisfactorily corrected. SOLUTION: Regarding the imaging optical system for imaging the light from an object on an imager, the system includes, in order from the object side, a first lens group having negative power, a second lens group having positive power, a third lens group having negative power, a fourth lens group having positive power, a fifth lens group having negative power and a sixth lens group having positive power, and in the case of varying the power, at least the fifth lens group is moved, and also, the moving quantity of the fifth lens group from the wide angle end to the telephoto end is set as an appropriate extent.
