1,227,303. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. 12 Nov., 1969 [12 Nov., 1968], No. 55420/69. Heading B5K. Laminates 1, 2 of a thermoplastic resin 4, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, with a metal sheet 3 e.g. aluminium, on one or both sides are butt-welded by cutting back the sheets 3 from the edge(s) to be joined, heating projecting layers of the resin 4 to a welding temperature, and pressing together the heated faces until the edges of the sheets 3 meet with shearing of the displaced resin. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the edges of the sheets 3 are cut back for about 2 mm., e.g. by milling or making cuts at the desired position and pulling off the cut strip. Projecting parts 5 of the resin layers 4 are pressed lightly against a blade 6, heated to a temperature of 180-230‹ C., for 10-80 seconds. The blade is removed and the laminates are pressed together under a pressure of 0À8-1À5 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> In a modification, Fig. 4, to avoid buckling of the edges of the sheets 3, the edges of the laminates are clamped between members 8 having wedgeshaped edges which allow the displaced resin 7 to move outwards. The lower members 8 may be parts of a work-table. In a further modification (not shown), the blade 6 is omitted and the parts 5 are heated by a hot gas. |
