A transparent substrate (2) to which light from a light source (9) is introduced through at least one side surface thereof, and which comprises a transparent first glass substrate (substrate body) (5a), and a transparent low-refractive-index layer (6) provided on the first glass substrate (5a) and being lower in refractive index than the first glass substrate (5a). When a transparent high-refractive-index layer (7) higher in refractive index than the low-refractive-index layer (6) is further provided on the low-refractive-index layer (6), light leaking to the outside from the first glass substrate (5a) via the low-refractive-index layer (6) is prevented.
