An exposure control method, an exposure control apparatus, and an image pickup apparatus are provided to control the amount of exposure by using a program diagram preferentially using shutter speed less liable to produce flicker when it is determined that a video signal includes the flicker component, thereby controlling the amount of exposure in a state that it is difficult to produce the flicker. An exposure control method comprises the following steps of: setting a video signal, obtained by photographing a subject by an imaging element, as an input video signal; integrating the input video signal over a horizontal period or more; normalizing the integral value or a difference value between integral values at adjacent fields or frames; extracting a flicker spectrum from the normalized integral value or the normalized difference value(S1); determining the presence or absence of a flicker component included in the video signal obtained by the imaging element based on the extracted flicker spectrum(S2); and controlling an exposure value by using a program diagram preferentially using a shutter speed less liable to produce flicker when it is determined that the video signal includes the flicker component(S8). |
