PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a directional antenna having a size comparable to that of a nondirectional antenna. SOLUTION: The variable directivity antenna comprises a nondirectional antenna element and a coaxial line for feeding the nondirectional antenna element wherein the coaxial line is composed of an outer conductor becoming a ground conductor, and an inner conductor becoming a signal line. The outer conductor has a rectangular profile in cross-section perpendicular to the axial direction of the coaxial line. A means for altering the electric field distribution of the rectangular coaxial line is provided in the boundary of the rectangular coaxial line and the antenna element. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
