An electric power steering apparatus and a method of detecting abnormality of an angle detector thereof are provided to easily detect the abnormality of the detector of the rotor position of the brushless DC motor when using the brushless DC motor as an electric motor of the steering assist. An electric power steering apparatus is composed of an angle detector(25) outputting the sine and cosine wave signals according to the rotor position of a brushless DC motor(6) for the steering assist; a torque detector(3) detecting the steering torque applied to the steering member; and an abnormality detecting portion(63) detecting the abnormality of the angle detector. The abnormality detecting portion contains a sine wave signal second power unit, a cosine wave signal second power unit, an adding unit, a judging unit, and an abnormality detecting unit. |
