The process involves performing measurements of eddy currents induced by the movement of an eddy current probe (2) at a surface of a model possessing characteristics close to that of a metal component (1). Variations of conductivity within the metal component are evaluated from the measurements of eddy currents. A characterization of open defects (Dd) in a surface of the component is determined from the evaluation of the conductivity variations. An independent claim is also included for a metal component inspection system.
