PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently input characters by a character input device with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: When an input key is pressed down (S100: yes), a character code of an "u" column of a row to which the input key is allocated is stored in a character code storing part (S101), and a decision flag of the character code is made to be in an undecided state (S102). When an input key at a right end of a key column to which an input key with the character code allocated belongs is pressed down (S103: yes) and when an input key at a left end is pressed down (S105: yes), the character code stored in the character code storing part is converted into the next character code and the preceding character, respectively (S104 and S106). When an input key in the middle of the key column or an input key other than the key column is pressed down (S107: yes and S108: yes), or when a prescribed time elapses (S109: yes), a decision flag of the character code is made to be in a decided state (S110).
