An electrostatic spraying apparatus for applying liquids such as varnishes or enamels, and particularly those liquids containing water as a thinner, comprises a rotary spraying member 1 connected to a source of high tension, means for feeding the liquid to the member 1, and an annular hood 5 which surrounds the member I and extends towards the workpiece 4 to be sprayed to intercept droplets of liquid which have trajectories diverging from the electrostatic lines of force so that they cannot impinge on the surface being sprayed. As shown, the hood 5 is stationary and adjustably mounted on a bearing bush 8 of a hollow shaft 9 of the spraying member 1, and has an outlet 6 for the intercepted liquid which returns to a storage tank 2. The liquid is supplied from the tank 2 to the member 1 by a pump 3. The hood 5 is preferably at the same potential as the member 1. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the hood is cone-shaped and rotated, and the droplets of intercepted liquid drain through holes into an outer stationary shield connected by a discharge pipe to the storage tank 2. In the case where the workpiece 4 is moving and the hood 5 is stationary, the hood may be of oval shape; or opposed parts of the outer edge may be recessed so that at these parts less liquid is intercepted.</p> |
