PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus for a recording medium which enables a coating layer to be formed continuously to a plurality of sheets of the recording media, enables the coating layer to be formed without a coating sheet replaced for the recording media of a plurality of widths, and can prevent smudging of the apparatus and a quality decrease of images. SOLUTION: The coating apparatus is equipped with a recording medium feeding means 5 for feeding the recording medium A to between the coating sheet B and an auxiliary sheet E transferred while opposed to each other; a coating layer forming means 14 which pressures from both faces the coating sheet B and the auxiliary sheet E with the recording medium A held between, and forms the coating layer F to a surface of the recording medium A and a surface of the auxiliary sheet E in the perimeter of the recording medium A; a branching means 11 which makes a transfer route L of the recording medium A and a transfer route of the auxiliary sheet E branch off each other; and a recording medium transferring means 3 which is disposed at the downstream side of the branching means 11 and can transfer the recording medium A by a speed V2 higher than a transfer speed V1 of the auxiliary sheet E.
