PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hardening the surface of an age-hardening metallic material for forming a hard body superior in adhesiveness with a substrate or durability; an apparatus for hardening the surface of the age-hardening metallic material; and an inexpensive cutting tool with superior durability. SOLUTION: This hardening method includes sputter-etching a solution-treated age-hardening metallic material 19 so that a temperature in the vicinity of the surface of the metallic material can enter a temperature range in which the compound 31 containing a precipitatable component precipitates, while cooling the metallic material 19 so as to prevent the compound 31 containing the precipitatable component from precipitating in a matrix 32, and at the same time sputter-etching it in such a range of the sputter etching rate as not to exceed the growing rate of the compound 31 containing the precipitatable component in the metallic material 19, in a depth direction, to form a micro protrusion of the compound 31 which contains the precipitatable component and has high hardness, on the sputter-etched surface of the metallic material 19.
