PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical engine for a rear projection type monitor capable of fetching in-screen-surface position information indicated by an optical pointer from the outside and also capable of coping with even a light source whose luminance is low. SOLUTION: In the optical engine 1 for the rear projection type monitor M, a projection means 4 is bisected by a 1st projection lens component 41 arranged on a light source 2 side and a 2nd projection lens component 42 arranged on a screen S side. A dichroic mirror 6 having characteristic that light emitted from the 1st projection lens component 41 through the light source 2 is made incident on the 2nd projection lens component 42 so as to project it to the screen S and the light projected to the screen S is made incident on an imaging device 52 again through the projection lens component 42 is provided between both projection lens components 41 and 42 and the imaging device 52.
