An air stream carries suspended fibre tufts, e.g. for feeding a card, and passes through a series of chutes to a take-off device where a lap is formed. The air stream is removed through a separating wall (11a, 11b) to an air take-off chamber (21a, 21b) which the air stream (F1, F2) traverses at a high flow velocity.
