PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical modulator with a simple construction, with which a liquid crystal is aligned without using, an alignment layer such as a polyimide film bringing about generation of minute dust particles and static electricity and deterioration in flatness of a substrate surface, and without using a liquid crystal/resin composite necessitating photo-polymerization treatment and a high voltage application, and with which disorder of liquid crystal alignment is prevented extending over a wide region between substrates, and to provide a liquid crystal display device using the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical modulator is equipped with: a pair of transparent substrates 2 placed opposite to each other; transparent electrode films 11 and resin thin films 12 laminated on the insides of the respective transparent substrates 2; a plurality of fine resin fibers 3 fixed and arranged between the resin thin films 12 and on one resin thin film 12 so as to be parallel with one another with equal intervals; and the nematic liquid crystal 1 filled in the respective intervals of the respective resin fibers 3. A material to form the resin thin film 12 preferably contains 0 or little proportion of a polar group and has little intermolecular interaction with the liquid crystal 1, for example, a polystyrene resin is used therefor.
