PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stock a document discharged to a paper discharge tray in an arranged state in the lateral direction of a guide. SOLUTION: This automatic document feeder comprises a paper feed tray 8 having paper feed side guide plates 31 and 32 arranged oppositely to each other and slidably in the lateral direction of the document, a carrying part 18 feeding the document on the paper feed tray 8 to a carrying passage 16 and leading the fed document to an image reading part 5, the paper discharge tray 11 installed under the paper feed tray 8, and a paper discharge part 20 discharging the read document onto the paper discharge tray 11. The paper discharge tray 11 comprises paper discharge side guide plates 35 and 36 arranged oppositely to each other and slidably in the lateral direction of the document. When a left side paper feed side left guide plate 31 and a paper discharge side left guide plate 35 in the lateral direction of the document and a right side paper feed side right guide plate 32 and a paper discharge side right guide plate 36 in the lateral direction of the document are connected to each other and a width between the paper feed side right and left guide plates 32 and 31 is controlled, a width between the paper discharge side right and left guide plates 36 and 35 is interlockingly adjusted.
