<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital image reading apparatus, which improves accuracy when performing maintenance (cleaning of a paper passing route) by a serviceman or the like of only a range reached from outside the apparatus and according to need inside the apparatus, and greatly overcomes the problem of extending of unnecessary maintenance time and degradation in convenience of a user and efficiency of maintenance of the serviceman due to a repeated complaint. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a gradation correction executing means 42 for performing gradation correction of the image which is read by a reading element using a reference color component 21, and a memory 43 for storing reference data obtained by reading the reference color component 21.
