PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device in which optical modulators can efficiently be cooled with a cooling fluid even where the plurality of optical modulators are used as components, and image quality is improved by the correction of axial color aberration, and to provide a projector. SOLUTION: Each optical modulator holder 4402 composing an optical device includes: framelike members 4404A and 4404B for sandwiching a liquid crystal panel 441; and light transmissive substrates 4421 and 4431 for covering the openings 4404A1 and 4404B1 of the framelike members 4404A and 4404B, respectively. In an emission-side light transmissive substrate 4431 composing at least one of the optical modulator holders 4402, at least either its end face on the luminous flux incidence side or its end face on the luminous flux emission side is curved to compose a lens.
