PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-speed drive method of a liquid crystal display element having a large contrast ratio. SOLUTION: When row electrodes are divided into subgroups and one row electrode is controlled to have either one of specified two kinds of potentials in a selected state, a set of potential states in the subgroups of row electrodes is previously assumed to include the all possible potential states of the subgroups of row electrodes, and the set is divided into a plurality of subsets. Row electrodes are selected by (1) successively applying a voltage at a time on the row electrodes of the subgroup to which one row electrode belongs so that the subgroup reaches the all potential states belonging to one subset, (2) carrying out the first step on the subgroups of the all row electrodes, and (3) carrying out the first and second steps on the all subsets.
