<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce impact to a pedestrian by an edge part of the rear end of an engine hood, in a pedestrian protection device for protecting the pedestrian by lifting up the rear part of the engine hood when he/she collides with a traveling vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: A shock-absorbing member 15 formed to an approximately U shape in a view of cross section is provided on an edge part 1c of a rear end of the engine hood so as to cover the edge part 1c. The shock-absorbing member 15 is formed, for example, by a rubber and a resin member. Whereas, a fragile part such as a groove part 16 is provided on a rear part of the engine hood and the rear end 1b of the engine hood is easily downwardly bent. The engine hood 1 is divided to two members (engine hood front member 1d, rear member 1e) in a vehicle longitudinal direction and a turning mechanism 18 and a lock mechanism 19 are provided therebetween.
