The method involves initializing data channels (12, 13) with a test bit rate, and supplying a test message with a current bit rate to the data channels. The test bit rate of the data channels is enlisted as a current bit rate when an error-free test message is received to a large extent. Outgoing messages of a bus connection unit are inhibited while transmission lines are disconnected from bus lines. An independent claim is also included for a bus connection unit for detecting the current bit rate of a data packet in a data bus system that works according to a controller area network (CAN) specification.
