PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the accurate distance by irradiating a reflection object with a transmitted wave, even when the reflection object in an obstacle is placed at a high position. SOLUTION: When detected to be in the low-speed state or in the near distance state, laser light is irradiated furthermore upward compared with the case at the ordinary traveling time. For example, assuming that faces having the face numbers of 4, 5, 6 correspond to a recognition using range in each side face of a polygon mirror, the face numbers are decreased by one and the recognition using range is switched to the face numbers of 3, 4, 5 in the case of the low-speed state or the near distance state. Hereby, even if the distance between a truck or the like and own vehicle becomes short, the laser light is irradiated upward and can hit onto a reflector on a high position. Consequently, the state can be prevented, wherein the laser light fails to hit onto the reflector because the distance between the truck or the like and own vehicle becomes short, and distance detection becomes suddenly impossible.
