<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion element by which adverse effects (displacement of an adhering position, inclusion of air bubbles, decrease in transmittance, etc.) caused when a 1/2 wavelength plate is attached to light transmissive members later can be effectively avoided, the reflectance characteristics of an antireflection layer can be made uniform, and miniaturization can also be attained. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of light transmitting members 2 are joined so as to be adjacent to one another via joining faces 3. Polarization separation layers 13 and reflecting layers 7 are alternately disposed in the joining faces 3 of the light transmitting members 2 adjacent to one another. In addition, a fine period structure body 16 having a function equivalent to the 1/2 wavelength plate is disposed in each joining face 3 in which the polarization separating layer 13 is disposed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
