PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrophoretic display device which responds fast, and has a high reflectance and a long life. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic display device is characterized in that: a dispersion layer having colored electrified particulates which have fullerene or its association body and a surface-active agent and are colored in a 1st color and insulating liquid in which the particulates are dispersed is interposed between 1st and 2nd substrates; the 1st substrate is provided with a 1st electrode and a 2nd electrode smaller in area than the 1st electrode, and the 2nd substrate is provided with a 3rd electrode facing the 2nd electrode; and voltage is not applied to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd electrodes when the 1st color is displayed and the voltage is applied between the 2nd electrode and 3rd electrode so that the polarities are alternated when a 2nd color different from the 1st color is displayed.
