A method for predicting an increased likelihood of amyloidosis comprising measuring the level of estrogen in a sample obtained from a subject and comparing the measured level against either a normal level or a level of estrogen taken from the subject at an earlier time, then determining whether there is an increased likelihood of amyloidosis based upon a decrease in the level of an estrogen compound observed in the sample.
