<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of detecting signs of its use by a user other than rise of an original cover. <P>SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an external optical sensor 100 mounted inside a scanner main body 10 including an original platen having a placing face 9 to place an original, which is other than or in common use of a liner CCD 27 that receives a reflected light from the original on the placing face 9 for receiving light generated from a light source 23 and converts the reflected light into an electric signal. The external optical sensor 100 detects an external light from the outside of the main body 10 and outputs a detection signal. A control section 45 in a scanner 1 discriminates whether or not the intensity of the detected external light increases or whether or not the intensity decreases on the basis of the detection signal from the external optical sensor 100 and releases a power saving mode when the image scanner 1 is in the midst of the power saving mode when the control section 45 discriminates either of the increased intensity of the external light and the decreased intensity of the external light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
