Water-dilutable polyester resin (ABCD) with a content of 1-10 wt% of units derived from unsaturated condensed components contains 10-2000 mmols/kg olefinic double bonds and 20-300 mmols/kg sulfonic acid groups. Independent claims are also included for (1) water-dilutable modified polyester resin (ABCDE) obtained by polymerisation of unsaturated monomers (E) in presence of polyester resin (ABCD), with a content of 20-80 wt% of the resulting vinyl polymer and 4-240 mmols/kg sulfonic acid groups (2) a method as described above for the production of (ABCDE) (3) coating materials containing resins (ABCD) or (ABCDE) (4) one-component coating materials containing (ABCD) or (ABCDE) and an aminoplastic resin.
