An additive for a liquid fuel which comprises at least one of the tourmaline in the form of a powder or fine particles, a fluid, such as a liquid, containing the tourmaline dispersed therein in a colloidal state, and a fluid, such as a liquid, containing the tourmaline a part of which is dispersed therein in a colloidal state and the remainder of which is dispersed in a finely particulate state; and a fuel comprising the additive for a liquid fuel. A test of a fuel containing the above additive in an amount of 0.002 grams per 1 liter of kerosene by the use of a diesel engine automobile showed a 16 % reduction in the emission of particulates, a 10 % reduction in the emission of carbon monoxide, and a 2.0 to 3.7 % enhancement in the maximum axis torque. The additive for a liquid fuel allows the reduction in the amounts of a particulate material and a harmful gas such as carbon monoxide in an exhaust gas from a liquid fuel combustion apparatus such as an automobile, without the use of a special device.
