PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus of easy operability which reduces volume of vegetable garbage and makes it in a fibrous state to facilitate its conversion to a compost. SOLUTION: The vegetable garbage is crushed into fine pieces, dehydrated, its volume being reduced, and converted into the fibrous state. A crushing part 20 to crush the garbage to be dehydrated and a pressing part 30 to compress the crushed garbage to be dehydrated are equipped. The compressing part 30 is equipped with rollers 31-34 to apply pressure on the garbage to be dehydrated crushed in the crushing part 20, which is structured by an elastic body of non-water-absorption at least on the outer periphery. In this way the rollers 31-34 can apply suitable pressure on the vegetable garbage and squeeze it, while they deform adapting themselves to the irregular shapes of the vegetable garbage crushed by the crusher. Thus, the vegetable garbage can be squeezed to the suitable state for compost without unnecessary excessive crushing of the vegetable garbage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
