PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an assay and substance for identification and evaluation of cyclooxygenase-2 and a pharmacological substance which is a strongly acting inhibitor for cyclooxygenase-2, and to provide an assay and substance for identification and evaluation of the cyclooxygenase-2 and the pharmacological substance preferentially or selectively inhibiting the activity of the cyclooxygenase-2 rather than cyclooxygenase-1 and activity of the cyclooxygenase-1.

SOLUTION: The assay comprises comparison and measurement of the inhibition of the cyclooxygenase-2 with the cyclooxygenase-1. The invention includes human cyclooxygenase-2 cDNA and human cyclooxygenase-2.
