A heat exchanger for a vehicle heating system has a thermally insulated housing (3) containing a heat retaining material (10) as well as two sets of coiled ducts; one connected between the outlet of the engine coolant circuit and the other to the heating system. The storage system retains heat when the vehicle is parked and enables the heating system to start providing heat as soon as the vehicle is re-started. The heat storage system can be heated via the compressor/condenser part of an air conditioning system, providing additional heat during cold days.
