PURPOSE: A hot metal pretreating method is provided which is capable of greatly improving desulfurization efficiency by injecting carbon based flux into desiliconized hot metal supplied from blast furnace before desulfurizing the desiliconized hot metal. CONSTITUTION: In a method for pretreating hot metal by injecting a desulfurizing agent into desiliconized hot metal, the method comprises the process of injecting 0.6 to 1.5 kg/ton of hot metal of a carbon based flux comprising 90 wt.% or more of carbon and 0.5 wt.% or less of sulfur into hot metal before injecting the desulfurizing agent into hot metal, wherein the carbon based flux comprises 90 wt.% or more of fixed carbon, 5 wt.% or less of ash, 2 wt.% or less of water and 0.5 wt.% or less of sulfur, and the carbon based flux is consisted of 95% or more of grains having a grain size of 0.5 to 5 mm.
