PURPOSE: A method for calculating the branch metric of Viterbi decoder and a circuit for the same are provided to improve the performance of the system by processing the data more rapidly. CONSTITUTION: A method for calculating the branch metric of Viterbi decoder includes: a first step of calculating an encoding data bit for the path metric; a second step of calculating the bit metric for the encoding data bit; and a third step of calculating the branch metric by adding the bit metric.
