The operating method uses at least one movement sensor (46), e.g. a pair of rotation sensors associated with respective vehicle wheels, for allowing the mobile braking (12) of the electromechanical braking system (10) to be used for bringing the automobile to a standstill, with operation of the stationary brake (14) only when the standstill position is attained, e.g. via an electromagnet (34). An Independent claim for an electromechanical braking system is also included.
