A vulcanizable diene rubber composition especially for use in tire treads or air cushions contains 1-100phr layered silicate modified with alkylammonium ions but free of previously swollen-in or polymerized-in guest molecules. R1 - R4 = H, optionally substituted, optionally unsaturated 1-40C alkyl optionally with ether and/or sulfide bridges or optionally substituted aryl or benzyl, with at least one R having at least2C and a terminal hydroxy group.
