A strip cutter system combined with a strip placer is disclosed. Strips are used in the packaging of finished lumber to provide lateral stability and shear stre ngth to the stacked package. The strips are cut from surplus lumber and are dispense d onto the lumber package simultaneously as they are cut, thereby eliminating the need to cut bundle, store, handle and load strips into a strip dispensing de vice. The raw material "blocks" for the strips consists of lumber of nominal 2" th ickness and any width, trimmed to approximately four feet long to match the width of thelumber package. Such material is readily available a s a by-product in any lumbermill. The blocks are loaded on edge into a stora ge pocket on the top of the strip cutter and placer so that the bottom edge of the bottom block bears by gravi ty against stops in the cutting zone. The blocks may be softened by pre-conditi oning in hot water, steam or by heating methods such as microwave and/or electric heating elements. When a strip is required, a sharp knife the length of the block is drawn laterally across the bottom edge of the block slicing off a strip approximately 1/8" thick. The strip falls by gravity onto the top of the lu mberpackage while retained between guides which extend f rom the lower side of the strip cutter and placer and rest onthe top of the lumber package. Alternati vely, a lowering device may be added to receive the strip as it is cut and then lowe r itand place it onto me top of the lumber stack. Additi onally, a sweeping device may be added to move a defective strip to one side and allow a second strip to be placed next to it. The number of strip cutter and placer units on a complet e system depends on the maximum number of locations on a stack of lumber at which strips would be placed on one tier of lumber.
