PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the correct number of remaining media and a thickness of media stacked in a paper feeding mechanism of an ink-jet recording device. SOLUTION: An optical reading device is mounted on a side face of the paper feeding mechanism for reading an optical signal of a side face of the media stacked on the paper feeding mechanism of the ink-jet recording device. The number of remaining media is detected on the basis of a peak number of a signal value outputted from each element of the optical reading device, the thickness of the media is detected on the basis of a peak width of the signal value, and the number of remaining media and the thickness of media are detected on the basis of a difference value of the signal value. A CCD camera and an artificial retina chip are used in the optical reading device. A mechanism for informing the detected number of media to a user, and automatically adjusting a height of a carriage on the basis of the detected thickness of the media, is mounted.
