A sensor consists of at least two individual sensors (DS, DS'). A vectorial addition circuit receives the signals from the sensors that occur when a metal part is detected. The output signal from the addition circuit is supplied to an evaluation circuit to generate a material-specific detection signal. The sensors are preferably spaced apart on the conveying device, and the output signals supplied after time delay to the addition circuit, to equalize the propagation time difference.
