PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-holding agent for greening having high water- holding capacity and effectively enhancing plant growth to provide a greening base containing the agent, and a greening method utilizing the greening base. SOLUTION: This water-holding agent consists of a crosslinked copolymer made from 60-80 pts.mass of (meth)acrylamide, (meth)acrylic acid and an alkali metal salt thereof where 5-50 mol% of 20-40 pts.mass of (meth)acrylic acid is converted to the alkali metal salt, and 0.01-5 pt(s).mass of a crosslinkable monomer.
