PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plane lens element which can refract transmitted light by refracting the transmitted light toward a focus like a convex lens and permits the transmission of the transmitted light without refracting the transmitted light. SOLUTION: Between a pair of transparent substrates 2 and 3 on an incident side and exit side formed with transparent electrodes 4a, 4b and 7 is provided with a polymer/combined liquid crystal layer 10 of a structure which consists of a polymer layer 11 and a plurality of liquid crystal layers 12 dispersed in this polymer layer 11, which liquid crystal layers 12 consisting of a liquid crystal material exhibiting a refractive index different from the refractive index of the polymer layer in a non- electric field state of the liquid crystal molecules facing random directions and exhibiting the refractive index substantially equal to that of the polymer layer when the liquid crystal molecules are arrayed with the major axes of the molecules aligned in the direction approximately perpendicular to the substrate plane by impression of an electric field between the electrodes and in which a plurality of the liquid crystal layers 12 line up substantially along the circumferential direction and height direction of a plurality of concentric conical surfaces peaking at one point on the outer side of the substrate on the exit side. |
