Polymers with thiol functions are produced by pyrolysis of the corresponding polymers with xanthate functions. A method for the production of polymers with at least one thiol function involves the pyrolysis of polymers with at least one group of formula (1), R1-R4 = H, alkyl, acyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl or heterocycloalkyl (optionally unsaturated or aromatic), or a polymer chain, or the groups R1 and R4 or R1 and R2 may form a cycloalkyl or heterocycloalkyl group.
